Has Instagram Lost Its Way?

Instagram Lost Blog Post

Remember the good old days?

I never say that. In fact my whole brand is built around looking forwards but today it seemed apt.

Instagram

Instagram announced it is shifting from a photo sharing app to a shopping and video focus.

What?

I know.  I have no idea how that will work, its not going down well with big users so far. I’ll come back to them later.

Shifting from its base seems at odds with the ‘niche down to succeed’ philosophy doesn’t it?

I’m guessing this has been brought about by shareholder pressure, but it seems like they are trying to be all things to all and that just doesn’t work. I’m not convinced Instagram will survive long term. It seems to be a classic case of not nicheing down.

Like I said, remember the good old days when long form video was on You Tube, short form on Tiktok with photographs and art on instagram?

Big creators on the gram, they are jumping over to Tiktok and You Tube.

Instagram did say they are focussing on creators, I hope they don’t leave it too late.

They hopefully will realise soon that if they reward their creatives for great content, they won’t feel the need to jump ship to Tiktok and You Tube.

Its great that they are looking at their strategy, but it seems like they are experimenting in live media, which could go wrong.

You Tube

YT has launched #shorts.

Again to compete with Tiktok, see a theme here?

Will this work?

I’ve been on You Tube a while now, so am just playing with #shorts alongside my usual content.

Twitter

I was pleased to see Twitter had the bottle to say, do you know what #fleets aren’t for us, so we’re not doing that anymore.

It’s hard not to get distracted by the fitness and dance challenges, but Booktok and various coaching tags are HUGE.

The main thing to take from all this? Change happens.

It can be great, or not. You can see it coming, or not.

Even the biggest company virtually in the world, Instagram (don’t forget they are owned by Facebook) sees a need to pivot to keep up.

Are you sticking with ‘traditional’ social media outlets, shifting with the tides and seeing where it goes or just jumping ship altogether?
