Age Old Problems – FREE extract
On the way home, the rains of the morning had stopped but huge puddles remained in the pock marked roads. She walked home alone, sometimes ‘lanky’ Lucy Laughton walked with her, but she had flu so was off school. She’d heard Lucy had been sent to stay with her aunt at the coast in the hope of a strong recovery. Louise didn’t miss Lucy. She didn’t miss her chatting all the way home. She did miss someone to use as a distraction for the bullies who would follow them to the end of their street.
Without Lucy, Louise stood out like a lamp to a moth. She may as well have a sign on her back, one of those they often fastened to her coat at school.
‘Kick here’ or ‘I’m fat’ or, showing little imagination in Louise’s opinion, ‘I smell.’
Today’s sign would’ve said ‘Push me in a puddle.’
She didn’t notice which of the group pushed her it didn’t really matter. As the bullies ran off laughing she slowly stepped out of the puddle. The muddy water already inside her shoes, destroying the cardboard soles placed there by her father the week before.
‘Lots of life left in these yet.’
She hated those shoes but at that moment valued them as highly as a bar of gold and was distraught at their loss. This loss meant her mother would notice. Her mother would notice they were not perfect. Her mother would notice they didn’t quite fit anymore. Her mother would be reminded that they couldn’t afford new ones. Her mother would blame Louise.
Louise just wished it hadn’t rained that day.
