Why Midlife Isn’t A Crisis

Why Midlife Isn't A Crisis Blog Post

In the same way that women get asked if it’s their time of the month when they express an opinion, mid-lifers can face judgment

If you are a mid-lifer, and take any decision that expresses your personality you’ll likely get accused of having a midlife crisis.

It’s annoying.

Midlife is a huge part of your life. It’s highly likely you’ll be taking some potentially controversial decisions.

Career change

They may force you to move on, redundancy, and of course forced early retirement are genuine issues.

Family

It may be your children have grown, and it’s empty nest time.

At the other end of the midlife scale, you could just be starting out on your family journey.

Either way, they are both tremendous impacts on your world.

It’s more than likely you want to do something different.

Boredom

The problem can come when you’ve been a bit bored, or in a rut and you decide to take action. If you’ve been in a poor relationship, midlife can be the time you realise it’s time to get out.

Why midlife, why all the changes?

A few reasons.

Money

You may feel a bit more secure.

Health

You’ll be getting more aware of your mortality.

Age

Those birthdays just keep coming.

Grief

People die. It’s a big shake up if a family member or peer dies. It gives us a wake up call.

___

You won’t all go out and buy a Ferrari or get a tattoo (I wrote about this) but midlife can be a great time to shift focus on to what is important.

Kick starts are often the best way to start the process

  • That new haircut.
  • The new wardrobe.
  • A huge pivot in your career.
  • A new found friendship.
  • Starting your new business.
  • Writing that book.
  • Walking away altogether

(If you are thinking of this last one, please reach out to professionals or out-reach groups in your area. There is always someone who can help.)

Midlife Isn’t A Crisis

It’s your opportunity to embrace your personality again.

If you’ve got lost along the way, or sunk into that rut of complacency, 2020 has taught us all that life is precious.

Make sure you live it to the full.

Do those shifts with tolerance, consideration and kindness.

But don’t hold back because of fear of judgment.

I never want to get to those pearly gates, or whatever is beyond, for someone to ask me

‘What did you do?’

And for me to answer with a list of things I would have liked to do, but didn’t because of what I thought other people might say.

Do you?

I have a weekly podcast called ‘Midlife Isn’t A Crisis’ I truly believe in this stuff.
